Share CFDs are (Contracts For Difference) on individual shares. A contract for difference, or CFD, is a type of derivative that allows a trader to gain long or short exposure to a trading instruments price. While the trader does not own the underlying asset, they ‘own’ any movement in the price of that asset while they hold a position. This is the principal difference between CFD trading and share trading, you are still able to benefit from price movements without having to own the physical asset. Share CFD trading has been popular within the hedge fund sector due to profitability.
CFDs are a leveraged product which means that traders will have to deposit a percentage of the full value of the asset you want to trade in order to open a position. Share trading, on the other hand, means you purchase the shares for the full amount owed.
In Australia, the stock market has pre-open and pre-close phases where buying and selling orders are allowed to overlap. A computer algorithm then matches these orders and determines the opening and closing price where the most amount of stocks trade through. Focus Markets provides access to both these market phases and all the associated extra liquidity.
